Each year PlayPenn opens its application process in late August/early September to consider plays and playwrights for its next summer's Conference. See the Application page for complete application guidelines and information.

Conference Directors are chosen in consultation with selected Conference Playwrights. The best way to participate in the Conference is to establish relationships with playwrights who have an interest in working developmentally with PlayPenn. Nonetheless, we are happy to hear of your interest.

Each year our need for Conference actors changes, depending on the casting requirements of plays selected to participate in the Conference. We make a concerted effort to cast from the Philadelphia professional acting community.

PlayPenn welcomes volunteers to provide hands-on support throughout the year and particular at the height of our activities, our annual new play development Conference. Possible volunteer opportunities include special event planning/hosting, artist hospitality, and general administrative assistance. Individuals interested in volunteering and individuals who have the interest and capacity to serve on PlayPenn's Board of Directors should contact Artistic Director Paul Meshejian at This email address is being protected from spambots. Each July, in support of our annual new play development Conference, PlayPenn offers six internships spanning three weeks in length. Interns provide critical hands-on production and administrative support during the Conference and have the opportunity to advance their own professional development through playwriting classes, writing and seeing their own ten-minute play performed by professional actors, and by directly supporting the developmental process of one of the conference plays. Applications for our internship program will be accepted in January. Questions should be directed to Tom Shotkin at This email address is being protected from spambots. I figured that I would observe and learn from the professionals at PlayPenn, but I completely underestimated how affective it would all be on me. Having to write my own scene and be on stage for the very first time completely changed my understanding of what I'm doing in theater. Always the director, I can now see what it's like to BE directed, which is invaluable. At school, Michele always tells us to "embrace the fear," and I truly never had a chance to do that until this summer. Now I get it. Thank you so much for the opportunity. I can't tell you how much it means to me; at risk of sounding dramatic, I'll say that it changed my "path" completely. - Maggie Matthews, Intern
